The GCSE speaking exam is a face-to-face assessment with your teacher acting as examiner, recorded and sent to the board for moderation. For AQA (8652/8692, first assessed 2026), there are three tasks: a Role-play, a Reading aloud section with a short unprepared conversation, and a Photo card discussion. For Edexcel (1FR1/1SP1, first assessed 2026), there are also three tasks: a Read aloud with short unprepared questions, a Role play in a transactional setting, and a Picture description and conversation task. Both boards award 25% of your GCSE to the speaking exam.

Yes — you pick your tier in settings and everything adjusts accordingly. Foundation and Higher differ in the complexity of language expected, how long your answers should be, and some topics.
