IGCSE Spanish Writing: Clear Ideas for Real Audiences

Answer the exact question, develop a reason and compare basic, developed and stronger models.

Plan the answer, not a memorised paragraph

Read the audience and underline every instruction. A message to a friend and a formal request need different openings. Make a tiny plan: one idea for each requested point, its time frame and one supporting detail.

  1. Turn each instruction into a checklist. If it asks why, plan a reason, not another activity.
  2. Choose language you can control. A relevant accurate sentence is better than a long sentence that changes the meaning.
  3. Draft one sentence per point first. Then add a reason, contrast or detail where it helps.
  4. Follow the word guidance for the actual board task. This short exercise below is not a full exam response.

Give an opinion somewhere to go

Opinion → reason → concrete detail is a useful pattern. Avoid adding “because it is good” to every sentence: explain what makes it useful, enjoyable or difficult.

Me gusta esta asignatura porque la profesora explica bien. Por ejemplo, ayer hicimos una actividad en grupo.

Time frames should answer the question naturally: a routine in the present, a completed experience in the past, a plan in the future. You do not need to force every tense into every paragraph.

  • Present: estudio — I study.
  • Completed past: estudié — I studied.
  • Past background: estudiaba — I was studying / used to study.
  • Future plan: voy a estudiar — I am going to study.
  • Preference: me gustaría estudiar — I would like to study.

Connect ideas without losing accuracy

Use y (and), pero (but), porque (because), sin embargo (however) and por eso (that is why). Add cuando (when) or aunque (although) when you can form the sentence accurately.

Accuracy and complexity work together. Add one structure you know, then check its verb and agreement. Do not stitch together impressive phrases if they stop answering the exact question.

Add a reason and a detail

Develop Me gusta mi barrio. into two sentences. Keep the first idea and say something specific about the area.

Reveal answers and explanations
Me gusta mi barrio porque hay un parque. Los fines de semana, me encuentro allí con mis amigos.

This is one possible answer: a reason plus a concrete activity. Other accurate, relevant answers work too.

Your turn: build a complete short answer

Writing for a real audience

Write a short blog entry about a family visit to another town. Describe the visit, compare it with your own town and suggest what you would do on a return trip.

Cover all three points before adding detail. Write your own version on paper; then compare the models. These are learning models, not exam-board mark bands or grade predictions.

Compare basic → developed → stronger
Basic
Visitamos una ciudad el sábado. Es más grande que mi pueblo. Me gustaría volver.
Developed
El sábado visitamos una ciudad y paseamos por el centro. Es más grande que mi pueblo, pero hay mucho tráfico. Me gustaría volver para visitar el museo.
Stronger
El sábado pasado visitamos una ciudad cercana. Mientras mis padres compraban fruta, mi prima y yo paseamos por el centro. Aunque es más grande que mi pueblo, prefiero las calles tranquilas de aquí. Si tuviera más tiempo, me gustaría volver para visitar el museo.

El sábado pasado makes the past meaning of visitamos clear. Compraban gives background; aunque qualifies the comparison. Si tuviera adds a hypothetical condition, not a guaranteed grade-raising phrase.

A final check that catches real mistakes

  1. Content: have I answered every point, including when, where or why?
  2. Verbs: does each verb match its subject and time marker?
  3. Agreement: are articles, nouns and adjectives consistent?
  4. Meaning: have I kept negatives and small words that change the message?
  5. Presentation: check accents, spelling and punctuation; do not rewrite everything at the last moment.

Compare using más grande que, not más grande de. Me gustaría is a conditional preference. Keep who did what clear: mi prima y yo takes a plural verb.

Remember tener años for age and hay for “there is / are”. Adjectives must agree: las clases interesantes, not las clases interesante.

Check the assessment for your board

Confirm your board with your teacher. These are original learning resources, not official papers or a grade prediction.

Cambridge exam year matters: 2025–2027 and 2028–2030 are different syllabuses. The PDF above is for 2025–2027; for a later exam, choose your year on the official Cambridge Spanish qualification page. Pearson guidance here concerns the linear 2017 International GCSE specifications (4FR1 / 4SP1); check the precise qualification your school enters.

Carry the skill into your next answer

Move between understanding language and using it. Pick a related resource rather than starting another long checklist.
