Common questions

Questions about Edexcel IGCSE French Speaking Practice

What does the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE French speaking exam involve?

The Pearson Edexcel IGCSE French speaking exam (Paper 3, code 4FR1/03) has three tasks. Task A is a picture-based discussion lasting 2–3 minutes: you select a picture before the exam, describe it, and respond to follow-up questions. Tasks B and C are two topic conversations of 3–3 minutes 30 seconds each, on topics chosen at random by Pearson — you will not know which topics until the exam begins. There is no role play and no read-aloud in this qualification. The total exam lasts 8–10 minutes and is worth 40 marks (25% of your IGCSE). It is conducted by your teacher and sent to Pearson for external marking.

Does ScoreMySpeech cover Pearson Edexcel IGCSE French topics?

Yes. The five topic areas assessed in the Edexcel IGCSE French speaking exam are: Home and abroad; Education and employment; Personal life and relationships; The world around us; and Social activities, fitness and health. ScoreMySpeech generates practice questions and prompts across all five areas so you can build confidence in each one before the exam.

How does Edexcel IGCSE French differ from Edexcel GCSE French?

The formats are quite different. The Edexcel IGCSE (4FR1) has three tasks: a picture-based discussion (Task A) and two topic conversations chosen at random by Pearson (Tasks B and C). There is no role play and no read-aloud section. The Edexcel GCSE (1FR1, first assessed 2026) has a read-aloud with short unprepared questions, a transactional role play, and a picture description and conversation in a chosen thematic context. The IGCSE is internationally recognised and often taken outside the English national curriculum. ScoreMySpeech applies the correct topic list and format for whichever specification you select.

Can I practise the picture-based discussion for Edexcel IGCSE French?

Yes — Task A practice shows you an image and asks you to describe the people, objects, and interactions you can see, then continues with follow-up questions linked to the image's topic. In the real exam you choose your own picture in advance, but practising with varied images builds the fluency and vocabulary you need to describe any scene spontaneously.

How should I prepare for the two topic conversations in Tasks B and C?

Because the topics for Tasks B and C are chosen at random by Pearson on the day, you cannot prepare specific answers for them. The best preparation is to practise speaking spontaneously across all five topic areas until you can sustain a natural conversation in French on any of them. Focus on developing opinions, giving reasons, and using a range of tenses — the marking criteria reward Communication and content, Interaction and spontaneity, and Linguistic knowledge and accuracy.
