Common questions
The Pearson Edexcel GCSE French speaking exam (1FR1, first assessed 2026) has three tasks: Task 1 — Read aloud (you read a prepared French passage then answer two short unprepared questions); Task 2 — Role play in a transactional setting (e.g. buying tickets, booking accommodation); Task 3 — Picture description and conversation (you describe one image from a choice of two in your chosen thematic context, then continue into a follow-on conversation).
The exam counts for 25% of your overall GCSE grade (50 marks). It lasts 7–9 minutes at Foundation and 10–12 minutes at Higher, with 15 minutes of supervised preparation. It is conducted with your teacher as examiner, then recorded and moderated.
Yes — Foundation and Higher are both covered. At Foundation, the language expected is simpler and responses can be shorter. At Higher, examiners expect a wider range of tenses, more complex grammar, and developed opinions with reasons. Switch between tiers in the app settings.
