GCSE French Speaking Practice

The GCSE French speaking exam is a face-to-face exam with your teacher, recorded and sent to the board for marking. It makes up 25% of your overall GCSE grade.

For AQA (8652, first assessed 2026), there are three tasks: a Role-play, Reading aloud followed by a short conversation, and a Photo-card discussion. After reading the passage aloud, the student takes part in a short unprepared conversation based on the same topic. The teacher asks four compulsory questions provided by AQA. For Pearson Edexcel (1FR1, first assessed 2026), the task order is Read aloud and short interaction, Role-play, then Picture task with conversation. Formats differ between boards — practice follows the format and timings of the exam board you select.

Yes, both tiers are covered. Foundation can award up to grade 5; the school or teacher should decide the most appropriate tier for each student. Foundation and Higher differ in the complexity of language expected, the length of responses, and how questions are phrased.

Topics differ by board. For AQA (from 2026): Theme 1 — People and lifestyle (identity, healthy living, education and work); Theme 2 — Popular culture (free time, customs, celebrity culture); Theme 3 — Communication and the world around us (travel and tourism, media and technology, the environment). For Edexcel (from 2026), the thematic contexts are: Lifestyle and wellbeing, My personal world, My neighbourhood, Media and technology, Studying and my future, and Travel and tourism. Practise across the content for your selected board rather than assuming particular topics will appear.

The different speaking tasks assess different skills and assessment objectives. Pronunciation, communication, comprehension and use of language do not carry identical marks in every task. In AQA's current specification, the Role-play is worth 10 marks, Reading aloud and the short conversation are worth 15 marks, and the Photo-card discussion is worth 25 marks. The complete speaking assessment is 50 marks and contributes 25% of the GCSE.
