GCSE French Mock Speaking Exam

Choose your exam board and rehearse a shortened, original French speaking mock with a partner. Use your tier’s tasks, keep follow-up questions unseen and speak without a script.

French AQA Pearson Edexcel

Choose your exam board

AQA and Pearson Edexcel have different speaking structures. Choose your board first, then use either Foundation or Higher throughout. These original exercises are free to use without downloading the app.

Set a timer and complete the mock without writing full answers. Ask a partner to open the hidden questions and read them one at a time. Keep them closed yourself so that the responses are unprepared. On your own, reveal one question at a time and answer straight away, but recognise that this is less like an unseen teacher-led exchange. This static page does not record or assess your voice.

AQA mini-mock route

Original ScoreMySpeech practice mock — not an official exam paper. Complete just your chosen tier. This is shortened rehearsal, not a full-length exam or a marking scheme.

Your practice timer

  1. Take 5 minutes to look through your pupil card, reading passage and scene description(s). Do not open partner questions or write full answers.
  2. Allow about 1 minute for the role-play.
  3. Allow about 2 minutes for Foundation reading and follow-ups, or 3 for Higher.
  4. Allow about 1 minute at Foundation or 1.5 at Higher to describe both scenes.
  5. Finish with about 2 minutes of Foundation conversation or 3 minutes at Higher. Speak aloud throughout; pause briefly to think, then answer.

These are shortened practice timings chosen for this page. Both boards’ real tests use 15 minutes of supervised preparation, then 7–9 minutes of speaking at Foundation or 10–12 at Higher. Do not use this mini mock as a substitute for your school’s full mock.

1. Role-play

You are booking a swimming lesson at a sports centre in France. Your partner is the receptionist. Complete all five tasks in French at either tier.

AQA: five clearly stated tasks including a pupil question. The instructions below are the same at both tiers.

  1. Say you would like a swimming lesson.
  2. Say which day you are available.
  3. Say how many people the lesson is for.
  4. Say why you want to learn to swim.
  5. Ask how much the lesson costs.
Role-play prompts, both tiers — partner only
  1. Bonjour, qu’est-ce que vous souhaitez réserver ?
  2. Quel jour êtes-vous disponible ?
  3. C’est pour combien de personnes ?
  4. Pourquoi voulez-vous apprendre à nager ?
  5. Pause: let the pupil ask the price, then answer: Le cours coûte douze euros.

2. Reading aloud and four follow-ups

AQA uses at least 35 words at Foundation and 50 at Higher, followed by four compulsory, unprepared questions. During the real supervised preparation period, do not read aloud.

Foundation passage · 36 words

Read only your tier’s printed passage. Do not add or skip words. Then put it aside and let your partner ask the questions without showing them to you.

Four reading follow-up questions, both tiers — partner only
  1. Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire en plein air ?
  2. Quels espaces verts y a-t-il près de chez toi ?
  3. Qu’as-tu fait dehors le week-end dernier ?
  4. Comment voudrais-tu améliorer les espaces extérieurs de ton collège ?

3. Photo-card style discussion

Cover both scenes in your opening response: say at least something about each. AQA uses one compulsory opening question about two photos, followed by unprepared conversation within the card’s theme. This practice focuses on the environment and places where people live.

Text scene placeholders — not photographs. Imagine only the details given. This rehearses description language, not observation of real images.

Photo A · Riverside path
Text scene placeholder. Three teenagers collect litter beside a river. One holds a bag and another uses a litter picker. A tree and a wooden bench are visible.
Photo B · Community garden
Text scene placeholder. Two adults and a child plant flowers in a garden. The child holds a watering can. A shed and several plant pots are behind them.

Prepared opening prompt

Qu’est-ce que tu vois sur les deux photos ?

Continue without a script

These four prompts are a shortened conversation sample, not the full conversation or a prediction of the questions you will receive. The partner may add a relevant “why?” or “tell me more” follow-up.

Foundation unprepared conversation — partner only
  1. Quel endroit en plein air aimes-tu près de chez toi ?
  2. Pourquoi est-il important de garder les rues propres ?
  3. Qu’as-tu fait récemment pour éviter le gaspillage chez toi ?

1. Read aloud and short interaction

Pearson uses 35–40 words in five sentences at Foundation and 50–55 words in four sentences at Higher. Its two unprepared interaction questions ask for present-tense likes, dislikes or opinions at both tiers. In the real 15-minute preparation, the final minute is in the exam room: reading aloud is permitted then; that minute is recorded but not assessed.

Foundation passage · 37 words

3. Picture task and conversation

Choose Picture A or Picture B and describe only that scene, then answer two compulsory, unprepared questions. Foundation: present / present. Higher: present / past. In the real assessment, the school manages Pearson’s choice of thematic context from two randomly generated options two weeks beforehand.

Text scene placeholders — not photographs. Imagine only the details given. This rehearses description language, not observation of real images.
