Eighteen practical actions for GCSE French speaking, from using preparation time to recovering after a pause. Pick a useful habit, rehearse it and notice what improves.
Useful speaking advice tells you what to do next, not how confident you should feel. These eighteen tips are grouped into six situations so you can pick the ones that solve a real problem. Try one action in your next practice session and check whether it helped. Do not attempt to remember eighteen instructions while answering a single question.
Longer is not automatically better. A role play needs its requested information, a read-aloud task needs the printed words, and a conversation needs relevant responses. A phrase cannot automatically earn a grade. Build a habit of understanding the task before deciding how much to say.
For the specifications first examined in 2026, AQA runs role play → read aloud with four follow-up questions → two-photo discussion and theme conversation. Pearson runs read aloud with two present-opinion questions → transactional role play → one selected picture, two questions and conversation in its thematic context.
Both allow 15 minutes of preparation and 7–9 minutes of assessed speaking at Foundation or 10–12 at Higher. The tips below explain what to do at each stage; use your AQA guide or Pearson Edexcel guide for the full format and tier requirements. Follow your school’s instructions.
Ask your teacher to confirm them. Choose AQA or Pearson tasks deliberately rather than practising a generic “speaking exam”. Check the order, preparation rules and picture format. Put a tick beside each task you have actually rehearsed with a partner. Knowing the task name is not the same as completing it.
Choose a subject-plus-verb phrase, an opinion and a reason you understand. Close the notes and use them to answer a new question. Change a detail on the second attempt. If you can only say the language in one fixed order, reduce the amount and practise combining it differently.
Have a partner move you from the read aloud into its interaction, or from the photos or picture into the relevant conversation. Keep follow-up prompts unseen. After the rehearsal, identify one transition that made you hesitate and repeat that short sequence. Do not wait until exam day to discover that an answer needs to start without written cues.
Read all the visible instructions before planning an answer. Identify the pupil-question task or tasks and the information you need to supply. Check which photos or picture you must use. Work out whether a response needs the present, past or future where the prompt indicates it. Do not spend preparation on a favourite topic paragraph unrelated to the card.
Within your board’s note rules, select a few cues for an idea or a difficult verb rather than writing a script to read. Arrange them so you can see which task each cue belongs to. Never use notes to replace reading the actual passage. Ask your school beforehand what you may write and take into the examination.
Use sentence boundaries and spelling patterns to anticipate difficult parts of the read aloud. For AQA, do this silently: there is no reading aloud during preparation. Pearson’s final preparation minute is recorded but not assessed and allows reading aloud. That minute is within the 15-minute preparation, not extra speaking time or a chance to receive pronunciation coaching.
Supply the requested item, information or question clearly. If the prompt only needs a day and a time, give a day and a time; do not pad it with reasons about unrelated plans. When you must ask a question, actually form a question, not a statement followed by silence. Rehearse the pupil question count for your tier and board.
À quelle heure ferme le musée ?What time does the museum close? A direct question for an appropriate original practice transaction, not a phrase to insert into every role play.
Keep a steady pace, use punctuation for short pauses and continue after a small stumble. If you omit a word and notice immediately, make a brief correction rather than restarting the whole text. Do not replace difficult words with your own words, add facts or turn the passage into a conversation answer. Practise comparing your recording with the printed text.
Use people, action and setting as a simple starting point. AQA’s opening covers both photos; Pearson asks you to choose one picture. Then listen to the actual questions rather than continuing a stored description. Pearson’s picture questions are present/present at Foundation and present/past at Higher; conversation follows in the thematic context. Do not invent invisible details merely to speak for longer.
Identify whether the examiner asked what, where, when, who or why. Begin with that information. If asked what you did last weekend, a present-tense account of what you normally do does not answer first. You may add a comparison afterwards when relevant. Practise by having a partner say what question your answer actually addressed.
Use a reason you can explain, not an impressive phrase you do not understand. One concrete reason is more useful than several repetitive adjectives. Add a personal example when the question and conversation allow it.

Notice words such as hier (yesterday), normalement (normally) and demain (tomorrow), and listen to the verb too. Choose a verb that fits. Do not insert a past and future sentence into every answer just to display them. A short relevant response creates a better base for development than a long answer in the wrong time frame.
Choose a recurring difficulty such as u/ou, a nasal vowel or a silent ending. Listen to a reliable model, repeat the word, then the phrase. Avoid adding an English-style ending just because the letter is visible. Record once and compare. Transfer the correction into a new answer so it is not limited to a drill.
Read a practice sentence in sensible groups and pause briefly at the end. In conversation, finish one idea before rushing into the next. Do not speak so slowly that each word becomes detached, or so quickly that endings disappear. Try two recordings at slightly different paces and choose the one your teacher or partner can follow more easily.
Practise words you frequently need: school subjects, activities and common verbs. Target sounds that affect understanding rather than imitating a dramatic accent. Check liaison with reliable examples because it is not required after every consonant. When unsure, ask your teacher to model a short phrase.
A brief pause is not a reason to abandon the answer. Identify the topic and requested information, then give a short accurate sentence. In conversation, simplify a forgotten expression rather than reaching for an untested complicated structure. In read aloud, return to the printed text instead of inventing a replacement. Practise this recovery with deliberately unfamiliar questions.
Pouvez-vous répéter la question, s’il vous plaît ? asks for the question again. Use it when you did not hear or need to hear the prompt once more, following the examination procedure. Do not expect the examiner to translate, explain every word or teach you an answer. Listening carefully to a repeated prompt is more useful than repeating your request automatically.
If you notice an error, make a short repair without restarting the whole response.
Hier, je joue… pardon, j’ai joué au tennis.Yesterday I play… sorry, I played tennis. This illustrates a brief correction from present to past, not an error to rehearse deliberately or a guaranteed source of marks.
After practice, write the correct verb in your revision log and use it in a different answer. If you are not sure a correction is right, finish the thought rather than making a chain of guesses.
For your next session, pick one preparation tip, one task tip and one recovery tip. Rehearse them with a partner, then record what changed. Improvement is a set of observable actions, not a requirement to feel fearless.
