What happens in this part of the exam?

  1. This opens the speaking test, before the Role play and Picture task with conversation. It is not AQA’s Task 2.
  2. Use preparation time to look through the printed text, notice spellings and plan sensible phrase breaks. The final minute of the 15-minute preparation period is in the examination room: you may practise the reading aloud then. This minute is recorded but not assessed.
  3. Read the text aloud, then respond to the two short unprepared questions related to it. At both tiers, these ask for likes, dislikes or opinions in the present tense. Do not rely on a script for the interaction.
  4. Foundation has 35–40 words in five sentences; Higher has 50–55 words in four sentences. Practise the passage for your tier, but apply pronunciation patterns to unfamiliar words too.

Original ScoreMySpeech practice task

A short journey to school

Read the short text for your tier, then answer the two original practice questions without a prepared script. Pearson’s interaction is shorter in format than AQA’s four-question conversation.

Foundation practice passage

Original follow-up practice questions

  1. Tu préfères aller au collège à pied ou en bus ?
  2. Qu’est-ce que tu aimes dans ton trajet ?

One language detail: In collège, è is an open vowel. The au in au collège and the eu in pleut each form one vowel sound, rather than two separate English vowels. Final written consonants are often silent, but not always.

Foundation / Higher support

These are concise ScoreMySpeech example responses, not official model answers or guaranteed marks. Follow the demands of your actual stimulus.

Foundation approach

Make the message clear

Je préfère aller au collège à pied. J’aime parler avec mes amis.

Read dix minutes as a phrase, not as two disconnected words. In the interaction, communicate your own journey.

Higher upgrade

Add what the task needs

Je préfère aller au collège à pied car j’habite tout près. J’aime ce trajet parce qu’il me permet de retrouver mes amis avant les cours.

Practise unfamiliar spellings in the passage, then give a relevant reason in the interaction rather than reciting the whole text again.

Common mistakes

A quick practice strategy

One focused rehearsal

  1. Read one sentence slowly and identify one difficult spelling.
  2. Say the passage again with natural phrase breaks.
  3. Close the text and answer a related question from a partner.
  4. Listen back once: check reading clarity and relevance of your response separately.

This is a revision routine, not official exam preparation timing.
