What happens in this part of the exam?

  1. Two weeks before the assessment, select your thematic context from two choices randomly generated by Pearson; your school manages this. You do not freely pick any context or bring your own picture.
  2. During preparation, choose between the two pictures on the allocated stimulus. Describe only the selected picture, covering the people, location and activity.
  3. Answer two compulsory, unprepared questions. Both are in the present tense at Foundation; at Higher, the second is in the past tense. Then move into an unprepared conversation based on the same thematic context.
  4. Description and the two questions take approximately 1.5–2 minutes at Foundation or 2–2.5 at Higher. The broader conversation takes approximately 3–3.5 minutes at Foundation or 5–5.5 at Higher.
  5. This is Pearson’s Picture task, not AQA’s two-photo discussion. Prepare vocabulary for the whole thematic context, not just one imagined scene.

Original ScoreMySpeech practice task

Choose a scene in a neighbourhood

Practice thematic context: My neighbourhood. Choose Picture A or Picture B below, describe only your selected scene, then answer two practice questions. A partner can continue with the separate conversation prompts.

Picture A · A public park
Designed practice placeholder — not a photograph. Imagined scene: Two people walk a dog on a path in a park. A child rides a bicycle nearby. A bench and trees are visible.
Picture B · A town square
Designed practice placeholder — not a photograph. Imagined scene: Two teenagers sit at a café table in a town square. A waiter carries a tray. Shops and a fountain are visible.

Opening practice question

Décris l’image que tu as choisie.

Original follow-up practice questions

Foundation

Continue the conversation

These are additional rehearsal questions after the two-question practice, not extra compulsory picture questions.

  • Quels sont les avantages de ton quartier ?
  • Qu’est-ce que tu voudrais changer près de chez toi ?

One language detail: Se promener means to go for a walk. À l’arrière-plan locates a visible background detail without inventing a story.

Foundation / Higher support

These are concise ScoreMySpeech example responses, not official model answers or guaranteed marks. Follow the demands of your actual stimulus.

Foundation approach

Make the message clear

Sur l’image A, deux personnes se promènent avec un chien. Il y a aussi un enfant à vélo.

Choose one scene and describe two visible details. Then treat the two questions as separate answers.

Higher upgrade

Add what the task needs

Sur l’image A, deux personnes se promènent avec un chien, tandis qu’un enfant fait du vélo à côté. On voit aussi des arbres.

Connect the visible actions without inventing where each detail is positioned. For extra Higher rehearsal, ask your partner a future question such as Comment voudrais-tu améliorer ton quartier ?

Common mistakes

A quick practice strategy

One focused rehearsal

  1. Choose one scene and identify two visible details.
  2. Describe it aloud, then answer two questions with a partner.
  3. Move to a new question within the same thematic context.
  4. Listen back, then improve one description and one conversation answer separately.

This is a revision routine, not official exam preparation timing.
