Edexcel GCSE French Speaking — Foundation Tier

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE French speaking exam (1FR1, first assessed 2026) at Foundation tier has three tasks:

• Task 1 — Read aloud and 2 short unprepared questions: You read a prepared French passage aloud, then answer two short questions you haven't seen before. Assessed on pronunciation and phonics knowledge.
• Task 2 — Role play in a transactional setting: A realistic scenario such as booking accommodation, buying items, or arranging an activity. At Foundation, you are required to produce one question as part of the role play.
• Task 3 — Picture description, 2 short unprepared questions and follow-on conversation: You choose one colour picture from a choice of two (in your pre-selected thematic context), describe it, answer two short questions, then continue into a conversation. At Foundation, the follow-on conversation lasts approximately 3–3.5 minutes.

The exam lasts 7–9 minutes at Foundation (50 marks, worth 25% of your GCSE). Preparation time is 15 minutes: 14 minutes supervised silent preparation plus 1 minute to practise the read aloud.

At Edexcel Foundation tier, Communication is the primary criterion. The examiner needs to understand what you are saying — clear, complete sentences in French matter more than complex grammar.

The Read aloud passage uses everyday vocabulary. The Role play scenario is accessible and the single question required is manageable with basic vocabulary. The picture description starts from a familiar image in your chosen thematic context, and the follow-on conversation uses structured, guided questions.

Foundation is targeted at grades 1–5. Clear communication across all three tasks is the primary requirement. Some tense variety will push you toward grades 4–5.

For the Read aloud section, practise reading French text aloud regularly — not just reading silently. Focus on the specific French sounds that differ from English: the nasal vowels, the French r, silent final consonants, and liaison. Recording yourself and listening back is one of the best ways to identify sounds you are consistently getting wrong.

For the picture and conversation task, choose your thematic context early and make sure you can talk confidently about topics within it. At Foundation, having two or three sentences ready for your chosen context means you always have something to say, even if the specific question surprises you.
