The AQA GCSE French speaking exam (specification 8652, first assessed 2026) has three tasks: a Role-play, Reading aloud followed by a short conversation, and a Photo-card discussion. At Foundation, the complete assessment lasts 7–9 minutes; at Higher, it lasts 10–12 minutes. Supervised preparation is 15 minutes for both tiers.
At Foundation, the Role-play takes approximately 1–1.5 minutes, Reading aloud and the short conversation together take approximately 2–2.5 minutes, and the Photo-card discussion takes approximately 4–5 minutes. At Higher, the corresponding timings are approximately 1–1.5, 3–3.5, and 6–7 minutes. After reading the passage aloud, the student takes part in a short unprepared conversation based on the same topic. The teacher asks four compulsory questions provided by AQA.
Yes — you pick your tier in the app settings. Foundation and Higher differ in what language is expected: Higher students need to use a wider range of tenses, more complex sentence structures, and develop opinions more fully. The AQA Photo-card discussion uses two photos, with the same photographs at Foundation and Higher. Prepare the compulsory opening question and say at least something about each photo, then take part in the related unprepared conversation.
The AQA GCSE French specification (from 2026) is organised around three themes: Theme 1 — People and lifestyle (identity and relationships, healthy living and lifestyle, education and work); Theme 2 — Popular culture (free time activities, customs, festivals and celebrations, celebrity culture); Theme 3 — Communication and the world around us (travel and tourism, media and technology, the environment and where people live).
Practise across all three themes rather than assuming particular topics will appear.
The role-play instructions are available during the 15-minute supervised preparation period. The current AQA specification does not include the former unpredictable role-play task.

The overall task format is the same at Foundation and Higher.
