The Cambridge IGCSE French speaking exam (Paper 3, specification 0520) lasts approximately 10 minutes and has two sections. First, a Role play of approximately 2 minutes: the teacher/examiner gives you a candidate card at the start of your 10-minute preparation time, and you respond to 5 transactional tasks (for example, accomplishing a task, buying something, or obtaining a service). Each task is scored 0–2, giving 10 marks. Second, two Topic conversations of approximately 4 minutes each: the teacher/examiner asks you questions on two different topic areas, allocated using a Cambridge randomisation grid. Both conversations are marked together on Communication (15 marks) and Quality of Language (15 marks), giving 30 marks. Total: 40 marks, worth 25% of your IGCSE. The exam is conducted by your teacher and moderated by Cambridge International.

The topic areas for your two conversations are allocated at random by your teacher/examiner using a Cambridge grid, so you cannot prepare specific answers in advance. The best preparation is to practise speaking spontaneously across all five topic areas until you can sustain a natural conversation in French on any of them. Focus on developing opinions with reasons and using a range of structures and tenses — both of which are directly rewarded in the Quality of Language marking.
The role play is marked per task: 2 marks if the information is communicated accurately, 1 if it is partly communicated or ambiguous, 0 for no creditable response. Total: 10 marks. The two topic conversations are marked together on two criteria: Communication (0–15 marks — how confidently you respond, develop ideas and justify opinions) and Quality of Language (0–15 marks — range and accuracy of structures and vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency and intonation). Total: 30 marks. Overall total: 40 marks.
