AQA GCSE Spanish Speaking — Higher Tier

The AQA GCSE Spanish Higher tier speaking exam (specification 8692) has the same three tasks as Foundation, with longer expected responses and greater language complexity. You have 15 minutes of supervised preparation to prepare one Role-play, one Reading aloud task and one Photo card.

• Role-play — 10 marks, approximately 1–1.5 minutes. More demanding vocabulary and scenarios. The role-play instructions are available during the 15-minute supervised preparation period; the current AQA specification does not include the former unpredictable role-play task.
• Reading aloud and a short conversation — 15 marks, approximately 3–3.5 minutes together. The text is at least 50 words at Higher. After reading the passage aloud, the student takes part in a short unprepared conversation based on the same topic. The teacher asks four compulsory questions provided by AQA.
• Photo-card discussion — 25 marks, approximately 6–7 minutes. Prepare the compulsory opening question and mention both photos, then continue into an unprepared conversation.

The complete speaking assessment lasts 10–12 minutes, with 15 minutes of supervised preparation time. The assessment is worth 25% of your GCSE and carries 50 marks.

The different speaking tasks assess different skills and assessment objectives. Pronunciation, communication, comprehension and use of language do not carry identical marks in every task.

The photo-card discussion at Higher starts with a compulsory question about two photos. Say at least something about each, then respond to the unprepared conversation while keeping your answers relevant and clear.

The overall task format is the same at Foundation and Higher. AQA uses different stimulus materials for the role-play and reading-aloud tasks, but the same photographs are used for the photo-card task at both tiers.

Higher tier covers grades 4–9. Foundation tier can award up to grade 5. The school or teacher should decide the most appropriate tier for each student.

The most effective preparation for Higher Spanish speaking is practising speaking without a safety net. This means doing practice where you genuinely do not know what question is coming next, and keeping your response relevant in Spanish rather than stopping to search for a perfect sentence.

Practise adding relevant time frames, opinions, reasons or examples when they fit. A varied range of accurate language can strengthen a response, but no single tense, expression or grammatical structure guarantees a particular grade.
