AQA GCSE Spanish Speaking — Higher Tier

The AQA GCSE Spanish Higher tier speaking exam (specification 8692) has the same three tasks as Foundation, with longer expected responses and greater language complexity:

• Role-play — approximately 1.5–2 minutes. More demanding vocabulary and scenarios. At Higher, the unpredictable element typically requires you to express and justify an opinion rather than convey a simple statement.
• Reading aloud and a short unprepared conversation — approximately 2.5–3 minutes. The text is more complex than at Foundation and the follow-up conversation question is more open-ended.
• Photo card discussion — approximately 6–8 minutes. More exploratory follow-up conversation moves beyond the image into wider themes and personal opinion. The examiner will follow unexpected directions.

Total: approximately 10–12 minutes plus 15 minutes of supervised preparation time. Worth 25% of your GCSE.

At Higher tier, the examiner is specifically looking for Range and Accuracy — evidence that you use a variety of tenses, complex sentence structures, and a wide vocabulary, accurately. Communication is still important, but it is assumed as a baseline; what separates grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 is the quality and complexity of your language.

The photo card discussion at Higher is less predictable. The examiner will follow up your answers, challenge your opinions, and push well beyond the image itself. Students who have only memorised a fixed set of answers often find themselves at a loss when the examiner deviates from the expected script.

Higher targets grades 4–9. The top grades require consistent, accurate use of complex language — including the subjunctive, the conditional, and a broad range of idiomatic expressions.

The most effective preparation for Higher Spanish speaking is practising speaking without a safety net. This means doing practice where you genuinely do not know what question is coming next, and forcing yourself to keep speaking in Spanish rather than stopping to think of the perfect sentence.

Build the habit of using at least three tenses in every extended answer. A reliable structure: say what you generally do (present), say what you did last time or when you were younger (preterite / imperfect), and say what you would like to do or what you think will happen (conditional / future). This pattern alone will significantly improve your Range and Accuracy score.

Practise giving opinions with justification. At Higher, me gusta is never enough — you need me gusta porque followed by a developed reason, and ideally a contrasting view with aunque or sin embargo. The examiner will often ask ¿Por qué? after any opinion statement, so always have the reason ready.
