Exam structure
For the current AQA GCSE French specification (8652), the Higher speaking assessment is a recorded test with a teacher-examiner. You have 15 minutes of supervised preparation to prepare one Role-play, one Reading aloud task and one Photo card. The role-play instructions are available during the 15-minute supervised preparation period. The current AQA specification does not include the former unpredictable role-play task. You can make notes and use them in the test, but you cannot use a dictionary.
The Higher speaking test lasts 10–12 minutes, has 50 raw marks and is worth 25% of the GCSE. Students take all four language papers at the same tier.
The different speaking tasks assess different skills and assessment objectives. Pronunciation, communication, comprehension and use of language do not carry identical marks in every task.
Tier differences
Higher tier uses the vocabulary and grammar set for the Higher tier and asks you to communicate with greater complexity. Develop your answers with relevant opinions, reasons and examples, while keeping the French you use clear and accurate.
The overall task format is the same at Foundation and Higher. AQA uses different stimulus materials for the role-play and reading-aloud tasks, but the same photographs are used for the photo-card task at both tiers.
Higher tier covers grades 4–9. Foundation tier can award up to grade 5. The school or teacher should decide the most appropriate tier for each student.
Preparation
The most valuable Higher habit is speaking your answers aloud, not only reading or writing them. Start by answering the question, then develop your view with a reason, an example or a comparison. This gives you practice retrieving French in the moment rather than relying on one fixed script.
Practise each of the current task types. For Role-play, get used to following the instruction and asking a question when the task requires one. For Reading aloud, make the words clear, then practise answering a related question without relying on a memorised response.
For the Photo card discussion, prepare the compulsory opening question and say at least something about each of the two photos. Then respond to the unprepared conversation, linking to your own experience or opinion when relevant. Build confidence by taking a moment to think in French, then giving a developed answer where it fits.
