Exam structure
For the current AQA GCSE French specification (8652), the Foundation speaking assessment is a recorded test with a teacher-examiner. You have 15 minutes of supervised preparation to prepare one Role-play, one Reading aloud task and one Photo card. You can make notes and use them in the test, but you cannot use a dictionary.
The Foundation speaking test lasts 7–9 minutes, has 50 raw marks and is worth 25% of the GCSE. Students take all four language papers at the same tier.
Tier differences
Foundation tier is designed for language of limited complexity, using the vocabulary and grammar set for the Foundation tier. The aim is not to produce the longest possible answer: it is to respond clearly to the task, use the French you know accurately and keep communicating.
The speaking format is the same set of task types at both tiers, but Foundation materials use the Foundation vocabulary and grammar. Clear, comprehensible pronunciation matters because your teacher-examiner needs to understand your spoken French.
Foundation tier is available for grades 1–5. A grade 5 can be awarded at Foundation; grades 6–9 are only available at Higher tier. Your teacher can help you decide which tier is right for you.
Preparation
The most valuable Foundation habit is speaking your answers aloud, not only reading or writing them. Start with a complete response that answers the question, then add a small extra detail or a reason. For example, J'aime le football parce que c'est amusant gives much more useful practice than simply saying Le football.
Practise each of the current task types. For Role-play, get used to following the instruction and asking a question when the task requires one. For Reading aloud, slow down enough to make the words clear, then practise answering a related question without relying on a memorised script.
For the Photo card discussion, describe what you can see before linking it to your own experience or opinion. Build confidence with short follow-up questions by pausing, thinking in French and then giving the clearest answer you can.
