Spanish Edexcel Higher Tier

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE Spanish Higher tier speaking exam (1SP1, first assessed 2026) has the same three tasks as Foundation, with longer expected responses and greater language complexity:

Task 1 — Read aloud and 2 short unprepared questions: A longer, more complex text at Higher. Accurate pronunciation across a wide range of Spanish sounds is required.
Task 2 — Role play in a transactional setting: At Higher, you produce two questions as part of the role play, and the scenario vocabulary is more demanding.
Task 3 — Picture description, 2 short unprepared questions and follow-on conversation: At Higher, the unprepared questions use more complex tenses. The follow-on conversation is more exploratory, moving from description into extended opinions and wider themes. The conversation lasts approximately 5–5.5 minutes at Higher.

The exam lasts 10–12 minutes at Higher (50 marks, worth 25% of your GCSE). Preparation time is 15 minutes: 14 minutes supervised silent preparation plus 1 minute to practise the read aloud.

What changes at Higher tier

At Higher tier, Spanish Range and Accuracy is the key differentiator. The examiner expects a wide vocabulary, multiple tenses used accurately, and complex sentence structures. The picture and conversation task is less predictable — the examiner will challenge your opinions and follow unexpected threads beyond the image.

Higher targets grades 4–9. To reach grades 7–9 you need to demonstrate consistent, accurate use of complex language including the subjunctive and a range of idiomatic expressions.

Preparing for Higher tier Spanish speaking

For the Higher Read aloud, practise with texts that go beyond the most common vocabulary. The challenge at Higher is applying Spanish phonics rules accurately to less familiar words, not just familiar ones. Pay particular attention to words with qu and c/z, and to the rr sound in less familiar contexts.

For the picture and conversation task, build your preparation around spontaneous response. Choose your thematic context and practise giving opinions with justification within it, using at least three tenses in every extended answer. The subjunctive — particularly with espero que, quiero que, and es importante que — is worth learning accurately for the top grade bands.

Higher tier — frequently asked questions

Do I need to use the subjunctive at Edexcel Higher Spanish?

Using the subjunctive accurately will push you into the top bands for Range and Accuracy. However, an inaccurate subjunctive is penalised — it is better to use a structure you know is correct than to attempt the subjunctive incorrectly. If you can use espero que… + subjunctive correctly, it is worth including. If you are unsure, use the infinitive construction instead (espero + infinitive) which is always correct.

How is the Read Aloud different at Higher tier?

The text is longer and uses more complex vocabulary, including words students are less likely to have encountered before. The expectation is that you can apply Spanish phonics rules systematically — not just read words you recognise. Practise with a range of texts at Higher-level complexity rather than only the vocabulary lists in your textbook.

How spontaneous does the picture and conversation task need to be at Higher?

Very. Edexcel examiners at Higher are trained to move away from prepared answers — if they sense you are reciting memorised content, they will ask a follow-up question that takes you off-script. The goal is to demonstrate real communicative ability, not recall. Practise responding to random Spanish questions you have not seen before, and focus on keeping the conversation going in Spanish even when the answer is imperfect.
